A Disabled Vietnam Veteran Gainfully Employed by Pearl Interactive

On August 17, 1977 Tom Houska, a former Vietnam Veteran and plant manager with Pioneer Manufacturing Company incurred an accident that would have a life changing impact on him and everyone in his life. Six years after returning from a stint with the mechanized unit of the 22nd infantry division where Houska rose to the rank of sergeant, Houska lost his balance on a ladder while painting his house. The unfortunate event resulted in a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed for the past 29 years. Through a family friend, Houska connected with Merry Korn, Principal of Pearl Interactive Network LLC, a virtual call center and work process solutions firm that employs  disabled veterans and people with disabilities .

“As soon as I met Tom and his wife Sue, I was taken with his positive spirit and his “can do” attitude. I would say Tom is one of the most consistent and hard working employees that we have. He produces, and our clients appreciate that, ” says Korn.

Upon hiring Houska was assigned to generate sales contact information for Columbus based virtual marketing technology company, Impact Systems Solutions, Inc. DBA MarTech . ” MarTech is thrilled to have partnered with Pearl Interactive Network to outsource our call center staffing needs. Not only do we share the same vision as Pearl Interactive, but our strategic plan calls for business growth resulting from enhanced business productivity.” Says Deborah Miller, President and owner of Martech.,. “I liked the idea of accomplishing our goals while at the same time providing meaningful work and sustenance to someone who needed home-based employment.” Houska’s task is calling on prospects to obtain customer profiling information for insurance brokers. “His productivity and enthusiasm are rare,” says Miller. Every day his gratefulness for the work opportunity is communicated by his amazing productivity.”

The Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission played a key role in what has turned into a win-win scenario for Tom Houska, Martech and Pearl Interactive Network. Included among the support services offered by the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission are computer equipment, phone service and consultation with a rehabilitation engineer to outfit Tom with assistive technologies. Bill Merholz, a rehabilitation engineer, installed Dragon on Tom’s computer system.

Dragon, a voice activated technology, minimizes wrist and hand use, while enabling Tom to complete daily activity reports.

Tom Houska is one of several employees and independent contractors working for Pearl Interactive Network, LLC to provide outsourced call center and work process solutions to businesses and associations. Pearl’s model is a whole new way of thinking about outsourcing call center and work process flows. Their approach enables them to implement seamless solutions while cutting costs and delivering positive customer experiences.

“Tom’s working has been one of the best things to happen to our family in a long, long time. This is the first time in 29 years Tom has had the opportunity to work. Not only is he generating an income, but his enthusiasm and spirit has lifted to levels we never expected. When I hear him on the phone I am so amazed at how he treats every person he speaks to with genuine warmth and dignity. Our entire family is absolutely delighted and so grateful,” expounds Sue Houska, Tom’s wife.

Employee Spotlight – Amy, Home Based Administrative Assistant

Traveling across the country and following in the footsteps of her military family, Amy was living her dream as a Navy hospital corpsman—until she became disabled. Following an exhaustive job search in North Carolina, Amy gave up hope of finding employment—until she found Pearl Interactive Network, Inc.

Amy, is a two year associate with Pearl Interactive Network, a for profit social enterprise that hires skilled and talent home based employees with challenges to work. Amy leads a team of virtual administrative assistants on the behalf of a global pharmaceutical company.

“ I had no idea how difficult a job search for an administrative position would be. I thought my military experience and the fact that I had a Master’s degree would be helpful”

The combination of leaving the military, the side effects of Migraine medications, and an inability to find a job in her field, took a toll on Amy’s self-confidence

“Speaking as a veteran, we have a strong work ethic and a sense of pride about our work,” Amy said, “With no prospects of employment coupled with the fear of not being able to take care of my family, Pearl Interactive Network provided a welcome relief on so many levels. Most of all, they helped me regain my sense of pride.”

Amy, a chronic migraine sufferer, has attacks that can last three days or more.

“It is not uncommon during a migraine episode to have difficulty lifting my head Everything around me makes my head hurt. The noise, the lights…,” Amy said.
“Pearl Interactive Network is a fit for the needs of my family and myself. I have my own office. I am here when my children get home. My job is flexible and I can take care of my kids,” Amy said.

Amy also attributes her supervisors, Owner Merry Korn and CIO Diane Schrimpf, among the reasons she enjoys her job.

“Diane and Merry both are constantly giving feedback and that’s important. They’re good at what they do and taking care of their employees. If something doesn’t go right or I need advice I go to Diane,” Amy, a home based administrative assistant said.

Pearl Interactive Network provides outsourced call center, administrative, and IT help desk services to companies such as Pfizer by hiring people with disabilities, service-disabled veterans, and other workers with challenges. “People with disabilities are discriminated against. Employers just don’t know how to hire them,” says founder Merry Korn, 53. Her employees work from home, eliminating the difficulty that many disabled people face getting to work. Korn employs 18 people working on five permanent contracts for clients, but she expects to employ hundreds as Pearl Interactive moves into serving federal agencies as well as the private sector. While the company is ostensibly an outsourcing firm, Korn says the heart of the business is workforce development. “What I really do is take a workforce of people who have incredible challenges and I create jobs for them,” she says. Korn is now being approached by economic developers in rural Appalachian communities to see how her model of outsourced call center, administrative, and IT help desk services could create jobs there.
